Chef Marta's Rules (reported commands)

Inès writes to a friend about a weekend cooking class with a very strict chef, a sad man who wanted more chilli, and a white shirt that may never recover. Students guess the chef's rules from three things she said, read to check, then work out how we report instructions and requests with *told us to*, *asked me not to* and how that differs from *said that*. They fix a friend's mistakes, practise in both directions, then play a game of passing on instructions for a secret task.

My weekend in the kitchen

Task Read Inès's email to her friend Sam. What did the class cook? Did you guess any of Chef Marta's rules?

From: Inès · To: Sam · Subject: My weekend in the kitchen

Hi Sam,

You asked about my cooking class.

Our teacher was Chef Marta, and she was strict. Before we even saw an onion, the chef told us to wash our hands. Twice! Then she told us not to talk while she was cooking. Nobody said a word.

We made a chicken curry. Chef Marta told us that the onions were the most important part, so she told us not to rush them: thirty minutes, not ten. When Jonas, the man next to me, wanted more chilli, she asked him not to add any. He looked sad.

Her knives were beautiful and sharp. She asked me not to touch her knives. I could only use the small one on my board. Of course, I forgot. She gave me a look I will never forget.

She didn't tell us to bring an apron, so I wore my good shirt. My white one. Have you ever seen turmeric on a white shirt? It's still yellow.

On Sunday, she asked me to stir Jonas's sauce while he chopped the coriander. Then it was Jonas's turn: she asked him to taste mine. He said that it needed more salt. Chef Marta tasted it too, and she said that my sauce was "almost good". From her, that's a gold medal!

She didn't ask us to clean the kitchen, but we did it anyway. Nobody wanted that look again. At the end, she told me to come back in the spring for the bread class. She told me that it was even harder than curry.

I think I will. But I'll bring an apron.

Love,

Inès

HOMEWORK (B)

1 B · 2 D · 3 C · 4 A (E is not used: it would be My boss told me to come in on Friday)

HOMEWORK (A) (A POSSIBLE MESSAGE)

Hi! The landlord left a message. She told us that a plumber is coming on Thursday morning, and she asked us to be at home to let them in. She asked us not to use the shower until then, because it's leaking downstairs. She told us to put the recycling out on Wednesday night and not to park in front of the garage. She asked us to send her a photo of the gas meter and to water her plant in the hall. She didn't ask us to clean the flat, luckily!

Also fine was coming, was leaking (both still true, so either works); told and asked swapped where the landlord says "please" or "could you"; one thing she didn't ask can be anything she didn't mention.
